GUWAHATI: With less than a year to go for Assembly elections in the state, the Asom Gana Parishad, an ally in the BJP-led state government, claimed that a probable alliance of Opposition Congress and the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front would not have any adverse impact on the regional party.

Addressing reporters after the party’s central committee meeting here on Monday, AGP general secretary, Kamala Kalita hinted that the party membership would soon be strengthened and that the composition would be clear after the general meeting on August 27 next.

Kalita further indicated that the regional party would be contesting next year’s Assembly election from all the 14 constituencies it won in the previous election.

It may be noted that the central committee meeting was presided over by party president, Atul Bora who deliberated with the district presidents and secretaries on ways to carry out the party’s organisational activities.

The meet reportedly discussed the agenda of the 2021 Assembly elections.

However, senior leaders like Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Brindaban Goswami were not present at the meeting.

“I believe that AGP’s karmakartas (workers) are the force that would bring a new wave of progressive regionalism in Assam. We have moved forward keeping Assam and its interests foremost. This is the strength of AGP and this flame will always burn bright in the hearts of the people,” party president Bora tweeted later.
