SHILLONG: In the wake of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) seeking No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Meghalaya Government to repair two major National Highways passing through the state, the Government of Meghalaya has stated that the question of NOC does not arise as the roads have already been handed over to the agency.
It may be mentioned that many stretches of the two of the major national highways in the state -Umiam-Jorabat Expressway and Jowai- Ratacherra – is in deplorable condition and NHAI is seeking permission from the Government to repair the road.
Earlier, the NHAI had expressed its concern over the deteriorating condition of the Shillong-Guwahati Highway and sought the permission of the state government to carry out the maintenance work of the highway that serves as the lifeline of Meghalaya.
The residents along the Jowai-Ratacherra road have lamented about the deteriorating conditions of the road.
When asked about the labour force which needs to be brought from outside to repair the two roads, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that it is a different issue but as far as repairing the road, NHAI does not need any permission from the Government.
