GUWAHATI: Assam Police has pledged to further bolster its drive against illegal weapons and militant activities in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts ahead of the elections in BTAD. Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Assam director general of police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that Assam Police has achieved remarkable success with a series of illegal arms recoveries in the four districts under BTAD, especially over the past few weeks.
“We intend to keep our relentless dive against illegal weapons in BTAD going as the elections there are approaching. We cannot loosen our grip under any circumstance and will be keeping a close watch on any activity in the area,” Mahanta said.
The DGP said that many militant groups based in the BTAD area have a history of violence and subversive activities. “I also appeal to the people of BTAD to cooperate in our drive against illegal weapons and militant activities in the region,” he said.
Elaborating on the drugs scenario in the state, Mahanta said that the drive against illicit trafficking of drugs has picked up since June 26, 2020, with as many as 200 cases reported till August 30, 2020.
“Cases have gone up by almost 50 per cent since June 26 while as many as 601 cases have been reported since January till date and over 1000 people have been arrested during the period,” the DGP said.
