State govt to award Rs 1 lakh for protection of environment
SHILLONG: The state government has decided to confer an award of Rs 1 lakh for environment protection. In a statement on Tuesday, the government has said that the ‘Meghalaya Excellence Award on Environment Protection’ will be award to the deserving candidates on the occasion of World Environment Day every year. “Individuals including government employees, NGOs, traditional institutions, institution or organisation under government including bodies constituted under provision of Forest and Environmental Act and Rules, corporate sector, eco-clubs who render valuable services or make outstanding contributions in the field of forest and environment conservation within the state for not less than five years are eligible for the award,” the statement said. The statement added that proposals, recommendations and applications along with bio data and other particulars will be received not later than December 10 every year. Applications can be submitted through the concerned deputy commissioners, divisional forest officers or autonomous district councils for recommendations. For employees of government and public undertaking, application can be submitted through their respective controlling authorities.

People disclosing names of rape victims to face legal action
TURA: West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police has warned action against anyone disclosing the identity of the victims of sexual offences either directly or indirectly. “The disclosure of identity of a victim of sexual assault is a punishable offence under Section 228 A of IPC and Section 23 of POCSO Act. Therefore, any person involved in the act will be liable for action under the above mentioned acts,” the order warned.

Award for artistes, artisans
SHILLONG: The North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has invited applications for Young Talent Artistes Award for 2019-20 from candidates skilled in the categories of folk & tribal music/songs and dance theatre, dance drama, mime, painting, wood/cane and bamboo crafts, traditional handloom and handicrafts, pottery, etc. According to a statement on Tuesday, unmarried artistes/artisans between 18-30 years as on March 31 are eligible to apply. “Candidates who have received any such awards (state/national) earlier in the same field are not eligible for the scheme,” the statement said, adding that the award consists of Rs 10,000 as price money, a citation and a memento. The forms have been made available at the office of the Director Arts & Culture, Government of Meghalaya, Shillong, and the last date for submission is September 30.

ANTF seizes drug, arrests couple
SHILLONG: The Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) on Wednesday evening arrested two persons from Umshyrpi and seized contraband from them. Following the receipt of information that a drug deal would take place somewhere around Umshyrpi Bridge in the city, the ANTF team intercepted a vehicle (ML05E7993) and arrested Lucky Jana (35) and his wife, Klissida Nongkynrih (42), both residents of Bishnupur. Following a search, a bag with four soap cases containing suspect narcotics was recovered.  Preliminary test indicated that the market value of the suspected contraband weighing 46.10 gm is Rs 3,60,000.
