GUWAHATI: Three suspected poachers were apprehended in connection with the recovery of two elephant tusks and a deer antler with skull, from a house at Koraibari in western Assam’s Baksa district on Monday.
Based on a tip-off, a joint operation was launched by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), police and forest officials under Baksa and Mushalpur division. leading to the recovery of the animal parts.
According to WCCB sources, a handmade gun, ammunition and crackers were seized from the three persons.
Sources said that a young elephant was killed at Batabari reserve forest last month and its tusk was cut off.
WCCB officials reportedly followed up the case and gathered information about the tusks. The efforts paid off as both the tusks of the elephant, including the weapon by which the elephant was killed, were found.
However, reports from the forensic department are awaited.
