NONGSTOIN: The Hills Farmers’ Union Central Body has planned to organise the 3rd Meghalaya farmers’ parliament in West Khasi Hills, although, due to the ongoing situation arising out of COVID-19, there are chances that the programme might be cancelled.
“We have discussed with the state government to conduct the Meghalaya farmers’ parliament each and every year”, said Commander Shangpliang, president of the Union.
The Union, led by its president, had visited West Khasi Hills in order to take stock of the hardships faced by the farmers in the district.
A meeting was also held on Saturday, which was attended by hundreds of farmers.
In his address, Shangpliang informed that the Union has decided to provide the farmers with modern techniques of farming. He added that the Union aims to help the farmers become independent with the help of various SHGs and forming a cooperative society.
On the other hand, the Hills Farmers’ Union West Khasi Hills District also elected its executive committee members – Zacius Tympuin as president and Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh as general secretary, besides 20 others. Shangpliang administered the oath to the elected members.
