SHILLONG: On rumours that a concrete tank storing toxic effluents of uranium exploratory mining in Nongbah Jynrin, South West Khasi Hills, has exploded on Monday, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Cara Kharkongor, has said that the district administration is awaiting police report on this.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, she said, “A police team has been sent and they are proceeding towards the place and then we will get a report from them”.
She said that that the district administration had received such information and subsequently inquiries were made.
However, with Nongbah Jynrin located at a remote place with no network, there were stumbling blocks to the communication. Kharkongor said that the AMD officials, ruling out any possibility of explosion, informed the district administration that there was no activity and place has been sealed.
The DC, however, said that the district administration will wait for police report.
It may be mentioned there were rumours that a tank storing toxic effluents of the 1993 uranium exploratory mining in Nongbah Jynrin exploded as per information received from people residing in those areas.
