TURA: A 48-year-old man who was out fishing late Friday night in Phulbari area was electrocuted to death after he failed to notice, under the cover of darkness, a low-lying live wire that was dangling into the lake.
The deceased, identified as Nobur Ali, had visited the lake from Shyamding towards the Solartek side of the embankment to in search of fish.
While the water level in the lake has been high for the past few weeks in view of the incessant downpour, the locals have lamented that poor maintenance from the Power department is somewhat blameworthy.
“There are no checks conducted by the MeECL and MePDCL officials. The live wire has been lying low for many months. Had the linesmen from the Power department regularly checked, this would not have happened,” complain locals from Phulbari.
Garo Hills has been plagued by a high number of fatalities caused by electrocution, and in most cases, the sheer laxity from the Power department has been blamed.
