KHADC chief writes to 15th Finance Commission on fund allocation
SHILLONG: The Chairman of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pyniaid Syiem has written to the Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, apprising him of the meeting held last year in Shillong pertaining to the allocation of funds to the Council. Syiem said that he has discussed with the Chairman of the Commission to remind him about allotting Rs 1544.34 crore for KHADC. He informed that the Executive Committee has decided to propose for construction of new projects of various departments within the jurisdiction of the KHADC. He has requested the Commission Chairman, NK Singh, to make provision for the said proposal for the financial year 2020-21 and allot some funds for the smooth functioning of various departments of the Council.

Women issues in SWGH discussed
TURA: The Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment on Wednesday held a review meeting in South West Garo Hills that conferred about various issues faced by women. The committee, headed by Committee Chairperson Ampareen Lyngdoh along with MLAs and others, held the meeting at Circuit House, Ampati. Among the issues discussed during the meeting include the inclusion of women with regard to job cards under MMEGRS, MHIS under status of implementing, mother mortality rate and infant mortality rate, delivery system provided for pregnant women including malnutrition, mechanism to curb crimes against women and children, and proper drinking water facilities in the district. The committee, during the meeting, suggested ICPS, Health, Police department and district administration to jointly endeavour to eradicate the practice of child marriage prevalent in the district. Active participation of women in village organisations was also encouraged and awareness campaign for the same was also suggested by the committee.

Demand to reopen weighbridge
SHILLONG: Two organisations have written to the state Commissioner of Transport, seeking the latter’s intervention into a dispute arising out of a weighbridge in Bagli, South West Khasi Hills. The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Khonjoy regional unit and All Khasi Hills A’chik Federation (AKHAF) have expressed concern over the suspension of the weighbridge that was recently opened by the state government at Bagli, SWKH, leading to the hindrance to the smooth operation of exports which, they claimed, is the lifeline for the state as a whole. The said weighbridge belongs to Sunil Singh M Sangma but its operation was suspended on October 1, subsequent to a complaint filed by MS Nongbri, who the organisations said is a failed bidder.

Draft Annual Plan of SGH approved
TURA: The Draft Annual Plan of developmental departments in South Garo Hills for the financial year 2020-21 was on Wednesday approved in the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) meeting held at the NIC Conference Hall in Baghmara. During the meeting, which was presided over by Rongara-Siju MLA and Chairman of the DPDC Rakkam A Sangma, several issues pertaining to developmental activities of both state and centrally-sponsored schemes in the district were discussed. Sangma, during the meeting, took stock of the various ongoing schemes and projects that are being implemented by the departments. Exhorting the developmental departments to continue in their endeavour to develop the district, Sangma suggested ideas for proper utilisation of the schemes initiated in the district.

No technician for sonography
TURA: The absence of a technician despite the availability of a sonography machine at the Williamnagar Civil Hospital is posing problems for the locals, according to two local organisations of the town. The GSU and the FKJGP, both from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills, on Tuesday submitted a complaint in this regard to Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, seeking the latter’s immediate intervention into the matter. According to the two organisations, people from the district are facing a lot of problems with regard to ultrasound and sonography as those needing the facility have to travel to other districts or state during the time of pandemic. “Although the sonography machine is available in the hospital, it is not being used as no technician has been appointed for many years. We urge you to view the matter with urgency and appoint a technician at the earliest for the betterment and benefit of the entire district,” the organisations said.

Proposals for financial help
KHLIEHRIAT: East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has invited proposals from NGOs, clubs and self-help groups of East Jaintia Hills for availing financial assistance or grant-in-aid under the Chief Minister Youth Development Scheme.The programmes and activities for financial assistance under this scheme include youth programme, cleaning drive coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, workshop, seminars on youth problem, development and counseling programme. The financial assistance will depend on the merit of the proposal, which will be scrutinised by the District Level Screening Committee and its decision will be final. Proposals are to be submitted on or before November 2.

Wine shops to open in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT: The DC (Excise), East Jaintia Hills has informed that all wine shops and bonded warehouses in the district have been permitted to open with effect from Tuesday between 9 am and 7 pm for five days a week.
