NONGSTOIN: The residents of Umshek village under Mawshynrut, West Khasi Hills on Saturday came out together to repair the PMGSY road from Umshek to Athiabari.
This was the second time that the villagers of Umshek and other adjoining areas had to take up the repairing work as the Umshek-Athiabari is the only road that connects them to other places. It was reminded that the construction of PMGSY road from Umshek to Athiabari was stopped after the Assam government obstructed the construction of the said road.
Since the road was the only connectivity for the border people, the villagers were compelled to repair the road.
The villagers said that they had approached concerned authorities several times apprising them about the condition of the road in the border area, but there was no response.
On September 2, 2020, the DCs of West Khasi Hills and Kamrup district opened a dialogue to maintain peace and the status quo but till date there is no solution or any decision to restart all the pending developmental activities in the border area, they said.
