SHILLONG: State Chief Secretary, MS Rao on Tuesday denied receiving any letter from an advocate of the Calcutta High Court demanding a reply within a week on the alleged atrocities meted out to non-tribal residents of Meghalaya.
“I have not received it. Officially it has not come to me. It is only floating around on social media and I have not received it so far,” said the chief secretary.
An advocate of the Calcutta High Court has written to the state Chief Secretary, MS Rao, demanding a reply within a week on the alleged atrocities meted out to non-tribal residents of Meghalaya.
In his letter to the chief secretary, Nripendra Krishna Roy, Advocate, Calcutta High Court had said, “As the Executive authority of the state of Meghalaya and oath-bound preserver of the Constitution of India the incidents in your state are not unknown to you. The atrocities against Bengali community who are permanent residents of the state you administer are as much deplorable as heinous. Being a seasoned statesman of the stature as you possess you must be aware that external agents and vested interest groups are trying to create chaos and pandemonium in the state by arousing parochial sentiments.”
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong while replying to this had stated that it is a matter of concern that people from outside the state have been casting aspersions on the sincerity of the state government in ensuring that peace and tranquility is in place, merely by paying heed to social media.
Making an appeal to cooperate with the state government, the deputy chief minister had remarked that what appears on social media is hyperbole.
It may be mentioned that the allegations of non-tribals being harassed at Ichamati has attracted a lot of attention of individuals and NGOs from outside the state which in-turn also has given rise to simmering unease and tension in the state.
