SHILLONG/TURA, Feb 10: In the run-up to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections slated for April 9, NCP State President Saleng Sangma, on Wednesday, beseeched voters to choose their candidates judiciously even as the Congress on Wednesday approved the first list of its 17 candidates.
Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, party chief Saleng Sangma said that it will be people’s call to choose their representatives albeit different political parties will create all sorts of scenarios before the elections.
“It is the people who have to take a wise call to decide whether they want their future to be a tragedy or a blessing,” said Sangma, who is fielding 3-4 candidates in the GHADC polls scheduled for April from the party.
“…if people criticise their choice of candidate after the elections, there is no point. Therefore, I urge the voters to choose their candidates wisely and judiciously,” Sangma said.
Asked about party’s prospects in the upcoming polls, he said that the party’s central leadership has been apprised about its plans to field few candidates and they have understood the situation.
He also said that the party so far has not decided anything on having pre-poll alliance, adding that the process of identification of candidates for the polls is under way and their names would be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, the state Congress on Wednesday approved the first list of its 17 candidates. The candidates were approved during a meeting of the Meghalaya Pradesh Election Committee.
The candidates selected for the polls include Kenadik S Marak for Siju, Freedarson N Sangma for Wagesik, Willy D Shira for Silkigre, Dipur Sangma for Rongrikkimgre, Olendro R Marak for Gasuapara, Sarbha R Marak for Barengapara, Nehru D Sangma for Amongpara, Sadhia Rani M Sangma for Dengnakpara, Mrinal R Marak for Naguapara, Kunal Ch Momin for Tura, Adamkid M Sangma for Asanang, Kansan Sangma for Nogorpara, Rinaldo K sangma for Rongrong, Pardinand D Shira for Damas, Cherak Watre Momin for Kharkutta, Rapiush Ch Sangma for Darugre and Alphonsush R Marak for Williamnagar.
The MDC elections to the Council will be held on April 9 while the counting will take place on April 14.
