SHILLONG, Feb 20: Chairperson of Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment, Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Saturday said that the state government needs to roll up its sleeves and ensure that there will be no recurring of crime against women and children, else it will tarnish the essence of the matrilineal society, which Meghalaya is widely known for.
Stating that it is unfortunate that such crimes against women have started coming to pass anew, Lyngdoh said, “It is heartbreaking, very sad indicator of the condition of crimes, especially against the fair sex in the state of Meghalaya. But we would like investigations to go on without any bias and once we have all the information sort on these cases occurred recently, only then we, as a committee, will be able to give further comments”.
She, however, added that the government needs to ensure that there is no reoccurrence of such crimes at regular intervals in Meghalaya.
“It will not go with the spirit of the matrilineal society and community that we have proudly inherited in Meghalaya. So, we are hoping that in the coming years, these kinds of cases slowly recede into oblivion,” she observed.
She informed that the Assembly Committee for Women Empowerment, after taking cognizance of various media reports, will sit soon.
“In the last five to six months, many things have surfaced. We would like to bring them collectively to the floor of the House,” she said.
