SHILLLONG, March 4: The state capital, for the last couple of months, has become witness to a plethora of petty crimes, much to the mushrooming apprehensions of the residents.
In a recent incident, some miscreants broke into the house of one Raj Kumar Singh in Lower Lachumiere on February 26 when the occupants were absent. The burglary was perpetrated and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash among jewellery and other stuff were purloined. The overall loss incurred by the family was Rs 7.7 lakh. Police have, meanwhile, said the perpetrators have not been identified as of now and efforts are on to trace them.
In another case, Riana Nongbri, principal of Nongkrem Higher Secondary School, East Khasi Hills, had lodged a complaint that on March 1, unknown miscreants broke into the school office and stole Rs 1 lakh in cash.
Apart from housebreaking-related crimes, multiple cases of lifting of two-wheelers and pickpocketing have also being reported in the city.
In one such case, Lawanaibok Makdoh had lodged a complaint that on March 2 around 12.30 am, unknown miscreants stole his motorcycle (ML-05S-9543) from his residence at Pynthorumkhrah.
In another incident, one woman, Albana R Momin, lodged a complaint that on March 2, unknown miscreant stole her purse containing Rs 4,000 in cash and documents at Khyndai Lad.
In the wake of the reports of petty crimes across city, a police official from the city, when contacted, conceded that theft cases have seen an upsurge in the city.
With regard to cases of break-in, the official said that increase in such cases may be linked to issues of livelihood or issues of drug.
The official has also assured that the police department is leaving no stone unturned to check such petty crimes.
