SHILLONG, March 11: Following the deaths of two minors at Umsalait village in West Jaintia Hills by electrocution, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed Chief Secretary MS Rao to have the matter enquired into and submit a detailed report to the Commission within a month.
The Commission reminded the government of its obligation to protect and safeguard the rights of individuals in the state.
Two minors, who were also siblings — Ripynskhem Papeng (9) and Arbaban (2) — were electrocuted to death after they reportedly came in contact with a high-tension wire outside their house at Umsalait village on March 10. Witnesses had revealed that Ripynskhem was carrying his brother while playing and accidentally touched a live wire. They died on the spot.
