AMPATI, March 20: Marking the nationwide celebration of Poshan Pakhwada, a daylong programme was held at Grazing A’ding, Chigitchakgre near Ampati on Saturday.
South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ch Ramakrishna, who was the chief guest during the programme, maintained that the high maternal mortality rate (MMR) and the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Meghalaya is not due to medical reasons but due to the problems of malnutrition.
Rendering solutions to the issue, the Deputy Commissioner said, “Nutrition is not a one-day job but a continuous process and a lot of nutritional problems can be addressed by making it our habit to consume locally and seasonally available nutrition-rich fruits and vegetables”.
He later distributed nutrition-rich seeds and saplings among the Anganwadi workers, and then led the gathering in plantation of saplings.
During the programme, which was thematised on ‘Addressing Nutritional Challenges through Food Forestry’, various events such as anaemia screening by the district health team, demonstration of hand-washing techniques by SBM team, cooking demonstration and display of nutritious food and other products by self-help groups under NRLM were conducted.
The programme was organised by District Programme Officer, ICDS (C).
