Lokayukta orders inquiry into GHADC crisis

TURA, March 21: Chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta, PK Mushahary, has directed the director of its Inquiry Wing to cause a preliminary inquiry into the ongoing crisis in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and submit its report within 15 days from the date of receipt of the order.
The Lokayukta’s order, which was issued on March 18 last, has also directed GHADC Secretary, Rikse R Marak, to produce relevant records during inquiry, including the proceeding/action taken or initiated against her if any order was passed against her and other respondents.
The order came after a complaint case was filed by the NGEA against Marak and 20 others of whom included former GHADC CEM, Dipul R Marak, former Raksamgre MDC, Benedic Marak, former Shyamnagar MDC, SG Esmatur Mominin, one Twinkle Newar Sangma (contractor) and 11 other contractors and officers of GHADC.
In their complaint filed with the Lokayukta, the NGEA is demanding the conduct of an inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of Rs 100.71 crore sanctioned by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for implementation of schemes under Special Assistance during the year 2015-2016, besides inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of Rs 25,98,810 and Rs 20,53,705, which the association claims was released by the state Mining and Geology department, and other anomalies and irregularities.
