TURA, April 14: Diarrhoea outbreak in Williamnagar town and its outskirts has left in its wake close to 200 people getting admitted in hospitals albeit East Garo Hills deputy commissioner has assured that rigorous measures are being taken to disinfect water sources.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, informed on Wednesday that so far, close to 200 people have been admitted to hospitals due to the disease with many showing symptoms of fatigue.
He added that although the origin of the disease is currently unknown, microbiology tests are being conducted on all water sources in the area.
“The PHE department is constantly checking the water quality at the source for supply in Williamnagar town. Tests conducted on Tuesday for raw water from Chibok and Simsang, after 24 hours, have shown no traces of bacteria. However, we request all to only drink water after boiling it for the next 10 days,” the DC appealed.
According to Tembe, the PHE has been distributing disinfectants to various areas and all measures are being taken to disinfect the water sources. The Health department is also on the move and is promulgating in all areas of Williamnagar the need to boil water before drinking.
“The disinfection of all open wells in affected areas of Williamnagar is under way. We have informed the people to either boil water or filter it before drinking it,” Tembe added.
