SHILLONG, April 16: Anomalies have been alleged at the check gates of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by a newly formed organisation, Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation, which alleged on Friday that there is a leakage from the two check gates of the Council leased out to the private parties.
Addressing reporters at Shillong Press Club here, the general secretary of the organisation, Wanbun Dkhar, alleged that the two check gates of the JHADC at Umkiang-Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills and Mookyndur in West Jaintia Hills have failed to examine valid documents of vehicles coming from outside the state.
Alleging that a total number of 58,293 vehicles without valid documents have managed to move past the two check gates between September 2018 and February 2020, Dkhar alleged that the people who are manning the gates are supposed to collect a minimum fine of Rs 1,000 and a maximum of Rs 1 lakh from vehicles plying without valid documents.
Revealing the RTI findings which they had received in 2018 and also information received from sources, the organisation informed that revenue of more than Rs 5.82 crore from the two check gates would be realised if Rs 1,000 as fine had been collected from the 58,293 vehicles.
Interestingly, he said that as per the RTI report, the amount which has been deposited into the JHADC account is only Rs 4.83 lakh. “This huge leakage of revenue has taken place at the time when the JHADC is facing severe financial crisis as it has not been able to release the salaries of its staff,” Dkhar stated. He also threatened to take a legal recourse if the JHADC fails to take any corrective measures.
Dkhar further clarified that they had delayed in revealing the RTI findings to the public since they were gathering more information on the leakage of revenue from these two check gates.
