SHILLONG, May 3: KHNAM legislator, Adelbert Nongrum, on Monday stated that the purported corruption and irregularities in the MeECL besides illegal coal mining and export of the mineral are far more dangerous than the COVID-19 situation in the state while firing a salvo at the National People’s Party (NPP).
“The only one benefitting from the illegalities and irregularities is the NPP, which is trying very hard to create a space not only in Meghalaya but even in the national politics. It is high time that an end be put to all these illegalities otherwise Meghalaya is heading into darkness,” Nongrum alleged.
He also raised the issue pertaining to the MeECL’s plan to implement smart meter project while also raising doubts over the implementation of the Saubhagya scheme.
The KHNAM legislator maintained that it is the company from outside that will benefit out of the implementation of the smart meter project.
He also questioned the decision to waive the electricity bills of Rs 1.74 crore to Sai Prakash.
The KHNAM legislator also opposed the decision to allot contract to a firm from outside the state for operation and maintenance of 56 numbers of sub-stations across the state.
He lauded the UDP for taking a tough stand by demanding an independent inquiry and the removal of those at the helm of affairs in the MeECL to ensure that the inquiry is free and fair.
“I am not afraid to speak the truth about what is happening in the MeECL. The people need to know the truth and this will be possible only if an independent inquiry is instituted,” the MLA said.
