MAWKYRWAT, June 17: A delegation of officials led by Health Minister AL Hek, on Thursday, surveyed the preparedness of South West Khasi Hills in dealing with the current situation arising out of COVID-19 in the district.
Flanked by local MLA and PHE Minister, Renikton L Tongkhar, and Director of Health Services (MI) Aman War besides others, the minister also inspected the upcoming 100-bed hospital at Mawkyrwat and also handed over an ambulance, oxygen cylinders and other materials to Rangthong Primary Health Centre.
In a meeting with village heads, religious leaders and leaders of Community COVID-19 Management Committees (CCMCs) from different parts of South West Khasi Hills, at Mawkyrwat, the health minister said that vaccine is the only weapon to fight the virus.
He further went on to defend the deputy commissioners in the state for directing people to get vaccinated.
“They had to urge people to get vaccinated because they love us and they want what is best for us. In this fight against the unseen enemy, we need the cooperation of all people because if we depend only on the government, we have already lost the battle,” the health minister said.
Talking about the 100-bed hospital, Hek said that the facility which has been pending for 14 years will be one of Meghalaya’s big projects coming up as part of its golden jubilee celebration.
Echoing Hek’s views on vaccination, PHE Minister Renikton L Tongkhar said all people should get vaccinated as it is the need of the hour.
Tongkhar pointed out that European countries are now almost free from the virus because of vaccines.
Others who spoke included DHS (MI) Aman War and District Surveillance Officer of South West Khasi Hills district, Dr WN Nary.
