SHILLONG, June 24: Congress Spokesperson Zenith Sangma on Thursday said that the inept handling of the MeECL by the state government has crippled the Corporation, and asked the government to abstain from running the state as a corporate house.
In a statement, Zenith rued that despite raising issues of mismanagement in the MeECL, there has been no representation in the Board of Directors by the Power and Finance departments for a long time.
“It is very important for the government to be vigilant on the crucial decisions made by the MeECL. But, intentionally, it was not done because there is a mala fide intention in this, so that there will be no disruption and the CMD will be free to dictate on any issue to get it smooth sailing,” Zenith said.
He also said that due to the mismanagement, MeECL is generating only 60 MW out of 356 MW of installed capacity and incurring a revenue loss to the tune of over 50 crore per month.
“I am afraid MeECL may not be with Meghalaya Government because their intent is very bad and they are paving the way to be taken over by some private company ultimately,” he said.
“The MeECL’s monthly expenditure including repayment of loan is around 110 crore against its monthly income of 80-85 crore. So, MeECL is running at a loss of 25-30 crore per month,” the Congress Spokesperson added.
He also asked Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Power Minister James Sangma to take a U-turn from the “wrongdoings”.
“We want good governance. Please don’t run the State as a Corporate House,” Zenith said.
