Mawkyrwat, June 30: The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) has invoked the state government to prepare a plan to ameliorate the COVID-hit economy and to help recover the loss incurred by the farmer fraternity in Meghalaya during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We do not blame the government for all these problems — that the people of the state including farmers have faced in these two years — because we all know that it was caused by the pandemic. But the government should prepare a plan on how to recover the economy of the state, which has declined. Our farmers have suffered so much during this pandemic that many times they have to throw the vegetables and other products on the ground as the markets were closed,” president of the HFU, Commander Shangpliang, said during a programme at Mawsaw village, South West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday.
Shangpliang also expressed the readiness of the HFU to provide a report to the government, citing loss incurred by the farmers in Meghalaya.
He also held an interactive session with farmers from six villages in Mawsaw area on the problems faced by them.
Calling on the farmers from the area to focus more on agriculture and in animal-rearing, Shangpliang assured HFU’s support to the farmers to help in marketing the products.
Later, he also inaugurated the Collection Centre of the HFU Mawsaw Circle at Mawthengbah Market, which was set up recently with an objective of marketing products, especially squash, produced by the farmers from Mawsaw area.
