SHILLONG, Aug 6: Meghalaya is soon going to likely showcase as well as sell state’s textile products on the ‘Spotlight North East’— a programme recently launched by Amazon India.
Amazon India had recently launched Spotlight North East programme. The programme aims to bring 50,000 local artisans, weavers and small businesses from North East region online by 2025, and boost exports of key commodities like tea, spices and honey from the region. Amazon will also enable participation of artisans and weavers from the region in key sale events through the year and help generate demand for their products from customers across the country. The Spotlight North East programme has been designed to boost the local economy, create jobs and accelerate financial inclusion and empowerment of women across the eight states of the North East region of the country.
Informing that the Meghalaya Government will soon enter into an agreement with the North East Handloom Handicrafts Development Corporation (NEHHDC) in this regard, an official on Friday informed that it is the textile products from state that will be made available for sale in one of the world’s biggest e-commerce platforms. “This will help to popularise our textile products globally,” the official said, adding that they are still working out the modalities.
According to him, the e-commerce platform will bring together a range of unique local products from the North East and showcase them to Amazon customers across India. “Spotlight North East will focus on bringing the benefits of e-commerce to the region’s 50,000 weavers, artisans and small businesses by 2025 by facilitating access to technology and markets,” he said.
Amazon has partnered with North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC) to engage, skill and digitally enable artisan and weaver communities in the North East and bring to them the benefits of the Amazon Karigar programme.
Meanwhile, a senior official informed that the North East desk of the Invest India office also recently showcased Meghalaya’s Ryndia products to various foreign embassies in Delhi.
“The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has also requested for the state’s unique textile products for showcasing at the Indian Cultural Centre & Chancery at Dhaka as part of the celebration of 50 years of liberation of Bangladesh,” he informed.
