SHILLONG, Sep 17: The Congress on Friday demanded of that the state government to shut down all coke factories under Elaka Sutnga, while claiming that many people settled in nearby villages are planning to leave the homes.
Taking part in the short duration discussion on ‘Failure of Governance in the State’, Congress MLA from Sutnga-Saipung, Shitlang Pale, said that thousands of people hailing from the various villages under Elaka Sutnga had recently held a public rally to demand shutdown of coke plants.
Informing that there are 41 coke plants in the area, Pale alleged that consent to establish (CTEs) was given to them without holding public hearing.
He also questioned the government for allowing setting up of such coke plants, which, he said, are affecting the environment. “I would urge the state government to close down these coke plants which has badly affected the people of the area,” Pale said.
