SHILLONG, Oct 13: The Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Most Rev. Leopoldo Girelli, will confer the Pallium upon the Archbishop of Shillong, Victor Lyngdoh, during the former’s three-day visit to Shillong.
According to a statement, Girelli will visit the state capital on October 14 while the Pallium-conferring ceremony will be held at 10:30 pm on October 15 at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians Laitumkhrah.
“Due to the pandemic, the ceremony will take place with limited number of participants with strict compliance to the government protocols. All the faithful are not allowed to come except those who have been specially invited. The faithful are requested to watch the Holy Mass online through the YouTube channel of SASCOM and in the local cable network channel number 277,” the statement said.
Pallium, which signifies the plentitude of pontifical office, is worn by the Pope and Archbishops. It typifies the participation of Archbishops in the supreme pastoral power of the Pope, who concedes it to them for their proper church provinces.
“According to the mandate of Pope Francis, the Pallium is now to be placed on the newly appointed Metropolitan Archbishop in his home diocese by the Papal Representative, the Apostolic Nuncio, with the participation of the suffragan Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province and the presence of the people of God,” the statement said.
