Legal awareness programmes in city

SHILLONG, Oct 23: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, Shillong, Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Social Welfare department and Manbha Foundation organised a legal awareness and outreach programme on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
A statement in this regard informed that the programme was organised on Friday at Shillong Law College as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations and was attended by Meghalaya High Court judge, Justice HS Thangkhiew, as the chief guest, judicial officers, and teachers and students of Shillong Law College.
During the programme, topics such as Free Legal Aid, Article 21, Article 39A, domestic violence, role of service provider, protection orders, residence orders, monetary relief, etc under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, were covered.
During the later part of the programme, Justice Thangkhiew also held interactions with the participants.
A similar legal awareness programme was organised in RBA Hindi Secondary School, Shillong, during which talks on the roles and functions of United Nations Organizations, Free Legal Aid, Article 21, Article 39A, and roles and functions of Para Legal Volunteers were held.
The programme was attended by Meghalaya High Court Judge, Justice W Diengdoh, as the chief guest.
In East Jaintia Hills, another legal awareness programme was organised at Khliehriat West Community Hall during which discussions on forest laws, free Prior Informed Consent under Article 19 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples were held.
