Demise of ex-professor condoled
SHILLONG, Oct 29: The Meghalaya Retired College Teachers’ Association (MRCTA) has conveyed its condolences over the demise of Prof. DL Warjri, retired Head of the Department of Khasi, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong. Warjri passed away at his residence on Thursday. He was 86. Apart from being a loved and student-friendly teacher, Warjri is also known for spearheading many teachers’ movement in Meghalaya and always remained at the forefront in struggles for justice and benefit for the college teachers, the association said in a statement issued here. He was the founding member of Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) and also served as its president later. On the other hand, the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association held a condolence meeting on Thursday and observed a moment of silence for the departed soul.

Webinar on blood donation
SHILLONG, Oct 29: The Shillong College Unit of Youth Red Cross on Friday organised a webinar on the importance of blood donation and its challenges. The college principal, Dr E. Kharkongor, in her address, spoke about the objective of the programme. On the other hand, the gathering was also enlightened on blood transfusion as well as the benefits of blood donation.

Free animal health camp
SHILLONG, Oct 29: Division of Animal & Fisheries Sciences, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ri Bhoi, organised a ‘Free Animal Health Camp’ at Animal Health Clinic for livestock farmers on Thursday. According to a statement, the programme, which was funded by ST Component, ICAR RC NEH Umiam, was attended by around 85 livestock farmers from around nine villages of Ri Bhoi. “The majority of farmers were rearing pigs followed by poultry and cattle,” it said. During the programme, a health camp was also organised during which talks were held on health while farmers were provided advice and free medicines.

Awareness on crime against children
SHILLONG, Oct 29: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority and District Child Protection Unit, East Khasi Hills, organised an awareness programme on ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012’ and ‘Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006’, as part of the commemoration of Centre’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, at the Community Hall in Nongkrem village on Friday. Speaking as the chief guest, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice W Diengdoh, encouraged the participants to sensitise others about the evils of child marriage that is prevalent in the society as he also spoke on provisions of POCSO Act, 2012. The resource persons for the programme included Legal Aid Counsel, DLSA, Daisily Thangkhiew, District Child Protection Officer, East Khasi Hills, Matti L Warjri, and Sub-Inspector, I Kharjana, from the Police department covered ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 and Child Marriage’, ‘Role of Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Officer in the rehabilitation of child in conflict with law and child in need of care and protection’, and ‘Police and Public Relation in curbing crime against children’, respectively.
