SHILLONG, Dec 9: Meghalaya’s indigenous brand “Na Kper” has won the prestigious Silver Innovations Award for its iconic Lakadong turmeric, here at the coveted SIAL India expo. The high-value turmeric bagged the esteemed award today on the opening day of the food exhibition which was earlier inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
Another brand “Dalade” secured a place among the list of top 10 brands for their ginger-infused honey product. It may be mentioned that “Na Kper: Homegarden’s Harvest” and “Dalade” are two of the 17 curated brands that the state has brought to the forefront of the SIAL India expo.
All of Meghalaya’s focus products including Lakadong turmeric, ginger, sticky rice varieties, honey and indigenous fruits are known to be produced in eco-friendly, chemical-free and home-based environments. Reportedly, other indigenous products like ginger infused honey, wild orange pickle, turmeric chocolates and jackfruit in brine are getting considerable attention from the visitors at the expo.
Notably, our state has partnered with SIAL India for the second time to hold a large-scale food and beverage expo where indigenous products from around the country are celebrated and promoted in a unified platform.
This three-day exhibition is taking place at Pragati Maidan, Delhi and is expecting a staggering footfall of 20,000 people by December 11.
Grown in the Lakadong area of the West Jaintia Hills district, the miracle turmeric Lakadong has been exported to the Netherlands and the UK. Filled with anti-oxidant properties and high amounts of curcumin, Lakadong turmeric is now considered a major game-changer for the farmers from Jaintia Hills.
