SHILLONG, Dec 19: Amid growing criticism of the state government’s move to bar teachers from participating in active politics, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Saleng Sangma has termed the decision as ‘good move’ while reasoning that the objective may be to revitalise the “failing” education system in Meghalaya through the teachers’ fraternity.
“It is a good move from the government’s side because when we look at the education system in the state, it is failing maybe that’s the reason the government is trying hard to rebuild the education system in the state because teachers are the coaches and the mentors in the society they are the one who build and safe the youths and guide the society,” said Sangma.
Stating that it is not only the teachers but even the government employees who are barred, he pointed out that those things are not being highlighted. “It is not just the teachers, any government employee cannot participate in active political process or in any party or registered party,” he said.
“If they keep on playing politics, there might be loopholes and there might be a fall-out and so that’s the reason why the government is trying hard to at least keep check and balances,” he added.
He emphasised that the government’s decision is aimed towards making things better in the state.
“Whatever the government is trying to do right now, may be they are trying to revive the education system through teachers and maybe that is the reason for barring them,” Saleng observed.
