JOWAI, Dec 30: With people putting up regular protests against dumping of waste around their localities, the town of Jowai is now filling up with heaps of garbage in unspecified areas. Tonnes of garbage lie piled up in several public spaces of the town due to vehement protests of people and the resulting lack of designated landfill sites in the town. In a rather bizarre incident, a heap of decomposed and foul-smelling trash was spotted on the roadside of the main market place, Iawmusiang, near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
It may be mentioned that the state government, Jowai Municipal Board and district administration have been repeatedly trying to improve the waste management system and demarcate certain areas as dumping zones but with no effect as the residents of the localities have been repeatedly opposing all such attempts. As such, the accumulated trash in common places has become a regular affair in the town.
Recently, the people from Amlarem Sub-Division registered a strong protest against the dumping of garbage at the old landfill situated at Mynkjai along Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki road.
Another similar event was reported when the district administration located a landfill site at Thadmusem under Nartiang area and the locals there staged huge protests leading to the removal of the landfill site from the locality.
