SHILLONG, Jan 6: The process of appointing a new Director General of Police (DGP), in the state is on, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Thursday.
“Let us see when the decision is taken at an appropriate time,” Home Minister said while adding that there is no time frame to appoint a new DGP.
It may be mentioned that the state government has shortlisted the names of five IPS officers for appointment as the next Director-General of Police. They are Mukesh Agarwal, KV Singh Deo, L Ram Bishnoi, SN Singh and Idashisha Nongrang.
Except for Nongrang, all the IPS officers are currently serving with the Assam government.
Agarwal (1989 batch) is the Special DGP (Border), Deo (1989 batch) the Special DGP (Prosecution/BIEO), Bishnoi (1991 batch) the Additional DGP (T&AP) and Singh (1991 batch) the Special DGP.
Nongrang (1992 batch) the junior-most officer, was recently promoted as Special DGP, Meghalaya.
There are eight senior IPS officers of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre who are eligible for appointment to the post of DGP and the state government has already forwarded the five names to the Union Public Service Commission.
Different political parties and pressure groups here want the state government to give preference to a local IPS officer who is likely to understand the ground situation better.
