TURA, Jan 8: Three hoolock gibbons narrowly escaped death after coming across a live high tension electrical line near Gandrak Dare falls on Friday.
As per reports, the incident happened when a female with two juvenile Hoolock gibbons came down from the foothills of Tura peak in search of food.
As they descended and tried to cross one tree from another, they came in contact with an 11 kv high-tension line.
A powerful jolt from the electrical line then hurled the hoolock gibbons on the ground.
While two got away with mild injuries, one of the hoolock gibbons was found barely conscious at the scene of the incident and it took hours for it to recover.
Informing about the incident, DFO Arpiyush Ch Sangma said, “As soon as we were alerted about the incident, our field staff rushed to the site immediately and cordoned off the area to prevent intrusion. We also informed the MeECL to shut down the line to protect the primates.”
“We kept monitoring the health of the gibbon but we could not come near it as it was inside dense forest that was inaccessible. It was finally able to get on its feet and climb up and head to the hills above,” he added.
