EGH groups nudge DC over ‘faulty’ construction of college
TURA, Feb 1: Local bodies from Rongjeng have alleged shoddy and sub-standard construction of Rongjeng Model Degree College and sought East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe’s intervention into the matter. In a complaint to the DC on Tuesday, the groups — FKJGP, GSU, AAYF and ASWA — have claimed that work undertaken by the contractor concerned is faulty, sub-standard and bereft of quality. They said that within three months since the completion of the construction, the plaster has started to come off, and the slab of the building has developed cracks and fissures already. “Our spot inspection revealed that the proportioning of the concrete has not been done properly. Cement can hardly be seen on the slab except sand and the hardened surface can be scraped out with bare hands. The plastering of the finished coat has also not been done properly as the poor work can even be seen from a distance,” they alleged. The groups said that one of the reasons of the faulty work due to no proper monitoring by the site engineer who, they alleged, barely paid a visit to the construction site. The groups, while demanding action against all those responsible for the faulty construction of the building, have urged the DC to take necessary steps.

Ri-Bhoi cabbie dies in sleep
NONGPOH, Feb 1: In an unfortunate incident, a taxi-driver from Ri-Bhoi died in his sleep inside his vehicle on Monday night. As per sources, the deceased, identified as Shemphang Thangkhiew (45) from Pahambir village, Ri-Bhoi had gone on a picnic with his fellow taxi-drivers to Mawkhla. But after separating ways with his companions at around 7 pm, the deceased made what went on to be his last phone call to his family, and then surprisingly became inaccessible on phone as well as in person. Meanwhile, being weary of a suspicious person sleeping inside a vehicle, the shopkeepers of the Laybye market on Tuesday morning informed the elders of the village and found out that the driver had already been dead. The Nongpoh police later took the deceased to the Nongpoh Civil Hospital for necessary formalities. On completion, the body was handed over to the deceased’s family.
