TURA, Feb 5: Miffed over alleged substandard construction of Rongjeng Model Degree College at Darugre, students’ organisations on Saturday took to the streets to vent their ire.
A massive rally-cum-signature campaign was organised at the village of Rongjeng in East Garo Hills jointly by GSU, ASWA, FKJGP, AAYF and GSMC during which the agitating groups torched an effigy of the college building contractor, Rakesh Sangma, as a sign of protest.
The protest was also joined by local leaders who felt that the “shoddy” work could prove dangerous for the college students.
The groups had earlier met the EGH Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, and submitted a complaint, seeking against the contractor. Their joint complaint, submitted on Tuesday, claimed that work undertaken on the building was faulty, substandard and bereft of quality.
They had alleged that within three months since the completion of the construction, the plaster has started to come off, and the slab of the building has developed cracks and fissures already.
“Our spot inspection revealed that the proportioning of the concrete has not been done properly. Cement can hardly be seen on the slab except sand and the hardened surface can be scraped out with bare hands. The plastering of the finished coat has also not been done properly as the poor work can even be seen from a distance,” the groups had alleged.
The groups said that one of the reasons of the faulty work due to no proper monitoring by the site engineer who, they alleged, barely paid a visit to the construction site. The groups, while demanding action against all those responsible for the faulty construction of the building, have urged the DC to take necessary steps.
They had, even during the construction, flagged concern over the poor work being carried out. However their complaints, as per the groups, were not taken seriously.
