Shillong, Feb 7: Mawphlang-Diengiei MDC, Lamphrang Blah on Monday was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The announcement on the election of Blah as the new chairman was announced by the Deputy Chairman, Alvin K. Sawkmie during one-day special session of the council.

The new chairman was accompanied by Council CEM, Titosstarwell Chyne, Leader of Opposition, Pynshngain N. Syiem and former chairman, Pyniaid Sing Syiem to his chair.

It may be mentioned that the opposition Congress had decided not to contest the election.

Earlier, Syiem who is also the NPP MDC from Sohryngkham had resigned from the chairman post to pave way for Blah.

This is the first time that the Mawphlang-Diengiei NPP MDC will occupy the post of the chairman of the Council despite being elected as an MDC since 2004.

Blah had earlier hold the position of Executive Member and Leader of Opposition in the Council.
