Tura, Feb 8: Continuing its demand for a Winter Capital in Tura, the A·chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has decided to hold a series of democratic protests in all the district headquarters of Garo Hills.

The first phase of the protests in the form of a signature campaign was held recently at Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills and the same programme has been chalked out at different dates, for the district headquarters of all five districts of Garo Hills in the days to come.

“The first phase is just to awaken the people of Garo Hills of the rights and privileges of being the rightful citizen of the Meghalaya state. The forefathers of our state while carving out the state thought of the idea of having two sessions for Meghalaya- the Winter Capital in Tura and the summer capital in Shillong. However, even after 50 years of statehood, the people of Garo Hills have yet to see it become a reality,” its President Georgeprince Ch Momin said.

Momin said that until and unless the winter session is implemented in Garo HIlls and all offices attached to it such as the Governor’s House, Additional Secretariat, the Winter Assembly, the quarter for the MLAs, the Joint Directorates, etc  function from Garo Hills, the agitation would continue over time.

Meanwhile, the association while expressing hope that the MDA Government would look into the matter, has also urged the people of Garo Hills to unite for the issue and raise their voices together as one.
