SHILLONG, Feb 27: Several students from Meghalaya, who are pursuing their MBSS degree at the Zaporizhzhia State Medical University in eastern Ukraine, are awaiting evacuation from their hostel inside the university campus.
Daphibalahun L Mawlong, a first-year MBSS degree student, hailing from Ladpnarrim village in Mairang, Eastern West Khasi Hills, on Sunday said they have been asked to remain in their hostel.
According to her, no fresh communication has been issued by the Indian Embassy on when they will be brought back to India.
“We are all anxiously waiting to be able to return at the earliest. As of now it is still uncertain,” she said.
Two students, Deepak Kumar and Richie Kalra, have reportedly taken a train ride to Lviv in western Ukraine from where they will attempt to cross the border into Poland, Slovakia or Hungary, the three countries closest to the city.
When contacted, Principal Secretary of Health department, Sampath Kumar said, “We are in touch with the students. Some of them are planning to cross the border tomorrow (Monday). Will keep you updated. Our CM is in Delhi meeting officials in the Ministry of External Affairs to facilitate all necessary support.”
