MAWKYRWAT, March 7: The sitting legislators with a clean record in the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) will not have to fret about securing the party ticket for the 2023 Assembly elections. This was informed by MPCC president Vincent H Pala during a meeting at Mawkyrwat with leaders and party workers of the Mawkyrwat and Ranikor Block Congress Committee on Monday.
Pala, during the meeting, assured the party workers that the MPCC will not meddle in the decision on allotment of tickets to the candidates for the Assembly elections.
“From the MPCC, we will not interfere because I have found through past experiences that such a move can backfire. An example to cite is from Shella constituency where the higher authority interfered in the ticket allotment to the Congress candidates; it resulted in losing the election because all the workers left the party and the newcomers did not know where to go. Rather than losing the election because of bringing new candidates, it is better to win or lose with the old ones,” the party president said.
Informing that the party is doing well in both Khasi and Garo Hills, an upbeat Pala also maintained that the Congress party will come to power next year.
“To clear all doubts, I want to tell you that the MPCC recently decided that all sitting MLAs and sitting MDCs will get the ticket to contest the upcoming elections if they apply for the ticket, except if the block committee says that the person is not good,” the MPCC president said.
He also said the Congress continues to emanate political might in Meghalaya despite the recent defection of some leaders.
Pala said he was taken aback when he, during his recent visit to Garo Hills, discerned that the Congress is far from being wiped out from the region.
The party president also announced that sitting MDC from Mawkyrwat, Carness Sohshang, and sitting MDC from Nongstoin, Gabriel Wahlang, will represent the party from Mawkyrwat and Ranikor constituencies respectively during the elections.
