SHILLONG, April 4: The PHE department has proposed a Rs 200-crore water supply scheme for the New Shillong Township (NST) under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) or Smart City programme.
Informing this, PHE Minister Renikton L Tongkhar on Monday said that the state government has submitted a proposal of Rs 200 crore for an NST specific water supply scheme and the amount may be revised once the Centre gives its approval.
He said the water supply scheme is expected to cover all the villages under the NST. “Presently, I do not have the exact number villages to be covered under this scheme,” the minister said.
Speaking about the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase III, the minister said the physical progress achieved was 75%.
“I am hopeful that this much delayed project is commissioned by the end of this year,” Tongkhar said.
The project had run into obstacles but the contractors resumed their work after the government sanctioned a revised estimate of Rs 65 crore.
The minister also sought the cooperation of the PWD and the Dorbar Shnongs to ensure that the contractors are able to execute their work without any problem. “The GSWSS Phase III is an important project for the people of Shillong city,” Tongkhar added.
