Local climbers excel in mountaineering course

SHILLONG, April 18: Three climbers from the state successfully completed their Training Course of Basic Mountaineering Course from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh. The training course was held from March 20 to April 20.
The Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) informed that Valarie Suchiang from Shangpung was awarded ‘Second Best Student’ while Tiklu from Upper Lumparing, Shillong and Rilang from Umshaken, Ri-Bhoi District were awarded ‘Grade A’ – the highest Grade given by the Mountaineering Institutes – for their performances in the training course.
The trainees were required to be physically and mentally fit and underwent training in various techniques such as pacing and movement on rock, snow and ice, use of rope and different types of equipment, development of leadership and team spirit, high altitude navigation and orientation.
After Completion of training in the glaciers, trainees were required to acclimatize in altitudes above 18,000ft to check their capabilities of survival and experience the harsh weather condition.
The training course was sponsored by the Government of Meghalaya.
