SHILLONG, April 27: The state government on Wednesday submitted before the Meghalaya High Court that several short-term and long-term measures have been initiated to ease traffic congestion in Shillong.
The government also submitted that there are suggestions that Shillong town may be decongested by restoring some of the roads that already exist or by widening the same so that traffic from Jowai to beyond Shillong does not have to pass through Shillong.
It was submitted on behalf of the state that a detailed project report pertaining to the Western Bypass has been submitted to the Union government or the appropriate agencies for clearance. The construction of the bypass would require the existing rudimentary roads to be widened and developed, it added.
The Court directed that the “several good suggestions” should be reduced to writing and, with the help of an authenticated map or real-time photographs, the proposals may be put to the state for consideration of the feasibility.
The respondents should indicate the extent to which they would cooperate with the state for the decongestion plan to be actually implemented, the order said.
