NONGSTOIN, May 1: Notwithstanding the criticisms that surround the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, the party has received rousing support from Nongstoin Constituency with prominent leaders of Indian National Congress (INC) and People Democratic Front (PDF) joining the NPP ahead of the 2023 Assembly polls.
Former leaders of Nongstoin Block Congress Committee including its vice presidents, Starvid Kharbani and Mario Nongkseh, along with their supporters, besides two former MDCs, who were leaders of PDF, JG Rynniaw and Nondi Diengngan, joined the NPP at a function in New Nongstoin.
The new members were welcomed to the NPP by party MLA from Nongstoin, Macmillan Byrsat, and president of NPP Nongstoin Block in the presence of party leaders of Nongstoin.
Starvid Kharbani said that Nongstoin has seen several changes in terms of development for the past four years, adding that he is satisfied with the work done by the local MLA.
Former MDC, JG Rynniaw, on the other hand, said that NPP won his favour after the party’s exemplary work in the all-round development and tackling vexed issues such as the boundary dispute and the Harijan Colony residents’ relocation.
Welcoming the leaders of Congress and PDF, Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat said during the four years as an MLA, two years were spent in staving off crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic which delayed various developmental activities in the constituency, but many of them have been restarted.
He highlighted the various projects being undertaken during the NPP’s governance like Nongstoin Urban Water Supply Scheme, Nongstoin-Wahkaji to Ranikor and Nongstoin-Rambrai to Kyrshai road construction, besides other developmental activities in the constituency including improvement of educational institutions, financial assistance to the needy and farmers.
