SHILLONG, May 1: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president, PN Syiem on Sunday observed that suspended Congress MLA PT Sawkmie’s announcement that he would contest the 2023 Assembly elections from the UDP might attract provisions of the anti-defection law.
Syiem made it clear that Sawkmie was still a Congress MLA as he and the other four had only been ‘suspended’ from the party for three years and not expelled.
“Even though he has announced his decision to contest from the UDP, the Congress cannot take any action until he officially joins the other party,” Syiem said.
“We will take cognizance of his action only when we have in black and white that he is joining another party. We cannot react just because he has expressed his desire to join UDP,” Syiem added.
