SHILLONG, May 7: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded the repeal of Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the HYC said the Act is unacceptable and asked the government to desist from turning Meghalaya into a gambling state.
HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said the government can come up with other measures to generate revenue.
He suggested the government to reduce expenditures in organising festivals “which are not benefiting the state”, stop paying allowances to MPs, MLAs, MDCs, former MLAs and former MDCs who are appointed as chairmen, co-chairmen, vice chairmen etc in boards, corporations as they either draw salaries or pensions from the government.
He also asked the government to lay its focus on reducing revenue leakages and “benami” transactions. The HYC insisted the government adopt zero tolerance against corruption.
