SHILLONG, May 7: The state BJP has welcomed the extension of the deadline for the Common Universities Entrance Test (CUET) 2022, but said it will support the demand of the students.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) extended the CUET deadline in view of the confusion among the academics and the students.
“It is a good decision. There should be a centre for the test in all the districts and the difficulties should be kept in mind while implementing this system,” state BJP vice-president, Bernard Marak said on Saturday.
The NTA had extended the last date for submitting the application for CUET to May 22.
Marak said the state leaders headed by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma should take up issues of the people and the students with central leaders. “We will also support the people’s demand,” he added.
Stating that there is a lot of confusion surrounding the tests, he said, “Many students are from a poor background and they should not be deprived of the facilities that their urban counterparts get.”
Providing at least one CUET centre in each district would help such students, he said. The chief minister had on Tuesday said students seeking admission to the undergraduate courses offered by private colleges or colleges funded by the state government will not be required to appear for the CUET.
“This exemption will continue and there is no timeline to it. The colleges which have nothing to do with the admission in NEHU will not be required to appear for the examination even in the years to come,” he told reporters.
