Billie Jean King Cup Finals to be held in Glasgow in November
London, June 7: The Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be held in Glasgow, Scotland on indoor hard courts from November 8-13. The International Tennis Federation issued a statement Tuesday confirming the Emirates Arena in Glasgow as the venue. Britain, as host nation, will join Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United States in the finals. The 12 teams will be divided into four round-round groups, with the winners of each group advancing to the semifinals. The Queen’s Club in London hosted the inaugural event in 1963 when the competition was launched as the Federation Cup and Billie Jean King was part of the winning US team. (AP)
Schalke appoint Frank Kramer as manager
GELSENKIRCHEN (Germany), June 7: Schalke appointed Frank Kramer as coach on Tuesday to help ensure the team’s survival in the Bundesliga after one season in the second division. The Gelsenkirchen-based club said Kramer has signed for two seasons and will replace Michael Büskens, who led the team to promotion as interim coach. Büskens, already a Schalke club great from his playing days, is returning to his position as assistant coach. The 50-year-old Kramer was previously coach of Arminia Bielefeld but was fired in April in the club’s unsuccessful bid to avoid relegation. His record was record was 10 wins, 16 draws and 18 losses after taking over in March 2021. (AP)
Seriton Fernandes signs multi-year deal with FC Goa
Margao, June 7: India international Seriton Fernandes has officially signed a new contract with FC Goa, extending his stay with the club till the summer of 2024. The new deal will see him remain with the club for seven seasons after being selected in Round 7 of the ISL player draft in 2017. “I’m delighted to extend my stay with FC Goa,” Fernandes told fcgoa.in after signing his new contract. “I made my ISL debut with the club nearly five years ago, and I realise that I’ve grown a lot as a footballer since then. FC Goa have played a huge role in my development, and I will continue to repay the team with love and commitment.” (PTI)
Chennaiyin FC sign NEROCA midfielder Jiteshwor Singh
Chennai, June 7: Two-time Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have roped in young Manipuri midfielder Yumkhaibam Jiteshwor Singh on a multi-year deal ahead of the upcoming season. Jiteshwor will be joining Marina Machans following an impressive outing for Neroca FC in the I-League last season in which he was adjudged the best emerging player. He had produced one assist and spent over 1500 minutes on the pitch, featuring in 12 league and five championship stage matches. The 20-year-old will look to add energy to Chennaiyin FC’s midfield, consisting of last season’s skipper Anirudh Thapa, who was retained by the club earlier on a two-year deal. (PTI)
Cleiton Silva, Bengaluru FC part ways after two years
bengaluru, June 7: Brazilian forward Cleiton Silva has departed Bengaluru FC after spending two illustrious years with the Blues, the club confirmed through their social media handles on Monday. Silva played 37 matches for the Blues and was a key figure in the Blues’ attack, contributing a total of 16 goals and seven assists across the two seasons. His double-digit haul of 16 goals over the two seasons has taken him among the top three goalscorers for Bengaluru FC ever since their inception in the ISL. (ANI)
