SHILLONG, June 13: In a bid to recognise and thank individuals, who have contributed in protecting the environment at the grassroots and to motivate others to join the green mission, the ‘Environmental Excellence Award 2022’ was organised by the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong and co-hosted by Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU, Shillong, at the university campus here on Monday.
Environmentalists Berlin Lyngdoh from Shillong and Wanphailang Dkhar from Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, were conferred the ‘Environment Excellence Award 2022’.
Berlin Lyngdoh has been working voluntarily for more than 15 years to promote the use of organic fertiliser and pesticide.
Her continued effort has resulted in many farmers joining the efforts to bring a positive change in replacing the use of chemical fertilisers.
Wanphailang Dkhar has been working for a clean and green environment voluntarily, while also training youngsters to join the green mission in Nongstoin and other regions of West Khasi Hills. With almost a decade of cleaning and plantation drives and motivating youngsters, his contributions have been well appreciated in the district.
Speaking as the chief guest, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, BK Lyngwa, congratulated the awardees and also talked about the different initiatives of the government and called for a collective effort to save the environment.
Head of Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU, Dr SS Chaturvedi, and Assistant Governor, Rotary District 3240, Kisan Tibrewalla, were the guest of honours.
