SHILLONG, June 14: A local court on Tuesday accepted a police peal to extend the custody of Joefreeson Jana who has been charged with the murder of his two minor children.
A senior police official said the court has accepted the plea and remanded the accused to five days in police custody. This is the third time the court has extended Jana’s police custody.
A police source informed that the department is speeding up the investigation in the case and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is providing assistance in the investigation.
Sources said that the SIT had revisited the place of murder a few days ago to recreate the sequence of events leading to the gruesome murder of the two minor children, ages 4 and 2 years.
“The police are awaiting the forensic report,” the source said, admitting there is pressure on the department to file the charge sheet at the earliest.
The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights is awaiting the status report of the police investigation into the case. “We will be sending a reminder to the police to provide us with the report on the progress of the investigation into this case,” MSCPCR chairperson, Iamonlang M Syiem had said.
