EKH traffic violations beget fines of over Rs 70K daily

SHILLONG, June 26: The traffic violations in East Khasi Hills have been entailing hefty fines, ranging between Rs 70,000 and one lakh, on an everyday basis, barring Sundays.
Informing this, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) of East Khasi Hills Shailendra Bamaniya, said, “Currently on a daily basis, apart from Sundays, we are receiving between 70,000 to 1 lakh as compounding. On Sundays, it’s a bit less as vehicles are less on the road.”
According to Bamaniya, the total amount generated in the district in a month out of the fines comes down to approximately 15 to 20 lakh, which is the minimum amount.
The SP informed that of all traffic offences, the most common ones are rash and negligent driving, drunken driving, failure to put on seat belts and helmets, traffic obstruction, haphazard parking, et al. Enquired how common is drunken driving offences, he said that while general offences as well as rash and negligent driving is common, drunken driving is the otherwise.
As per the data, in May alone 2,788 cases of traffic violations were detected and Rs 12,20,600 was realised by the traffic police as fines. As far as accidents in May are concerned, 18 cases were registered whilst three lost their lives and five were injured.
The SP also informed that regular checks are being conducted against tinted glasses.
He also admitted that tinted glasses are being used but on few vehicles.
